Artists, coders, writers, musicians wanted - "Garden of Doom" game

Hi folks,

A few years ago I started putting a little adventure game together called "Ginger Sam in the Garden of Doom". I did quite a bit of work on it, there are a half dozen or so locations with working puzzles, and a number of characters you can talk to with decent-sized dialog trees.

For various reasons I didn't ever finish it, and the code and graphics have been sat doing nothing on my hard drive ever since.

So, I thought I'd finally try to resurrect it and get the thing finished with perhaps a little help from the fine creative minds floating around on these forums!

I'm hoping I can find a few people interested in helping out in the following areas:

- Graphics / animation. It's all 2D (although the engine does support 2.5D, i.e. 3D characters walking around on a 2D background, Grim Fandango style)

- Coding. It's all been put together in the Wintermute Engine ( http://dead-code.org ). It has a scripting language which you'll have no trouble with if you're used to to C or C#.

- Sound / music. We need background music to create atmosphere, and sound effects. Eventually it'd be nice to get voices recorded, but that'll be further down the line.

- Writing. If someone has a particular flair for writing but isn't comfortable with coding, maybe you can still help with dialog, descriptions, story ideas, etc.

Game information:

The main character is a ginger biscuit called Ginger Sam. (Although we might have to change his name, it could cause confusion having another Sam around!) He has a simple goal: not getting eaten. This mission eventually opens up a much wider world of intrigue and puzzles!

I had a fairly good idea of where the story was going for about 2/3rds of the game, but the ending is a bit sketchy.

I'd estimate that in its current state the game is between 1/5th and 1/3rd finished, depending on how many more locations and characters we want to introduce.

I've attached few screenshots to whet your appetites.

I can't pay anyone unfortunately, and I'm not really sure whether it'll be possible to make any money from it in the end! But if we can make it really good and we find a way to distribute it, then all profits will be split fairly amongst anyone who's helped. Really it's just a hobby project I started that I think it'd be fun to see finished, so I'm not too worried about making money.

If you're interested in helping out, make a short application here or by PM, telling me who you are, what you'd like to help with, why you want to help, and any examples of your work you can show.

Thanks for taking the time to read!

Pete

  • I would be really interested in designing some backgrounds and characters though just a heads up the only program I got is Photoshop CS2. I see a lot of potential with such a quirky idea but I feel like the only thing letting it down from the current screenshots is the style, feels untidy and I've never personally liked that style of photo images with faces drawn on the top, feels kinda tacky... but I'm a fickle sod, but you sound interested in revamping it so I would gladley do some character designs and all that, I've just finished my College for this year so I've got a whole summer free!

    Hi Stell,

Yes, a lot of the graphics are basically placeholders that I intended to go back and improve later... so I'm totally up for anything and everything getting a revamp! There are a few bits that I was fairly happy with, but I still wouldn't mind if someone else can do a better job, I know my drawing isn't that great. I think back then I was using CS2, so any existing .psd files would also be in the right format for you.

I had a look at your DeviantArt page and your work looks fantastic - the style fits perfectly with the art direction I wanted to take.

I'm really glad you like the concept, I always thought it had plenty of potential (otherwise I wouldn't even be trying to revive it after all this time!)

If you like I can get you a copy of the game so you can have a better look and see what ideas you have!
