A House Divided: Trailer Analysis (S2E2)/A House Divided General Discussion (WARNING: SPOILERS)

For references, I will be analysing the following videos:

  • Pete
  • Pete and Clem appear in a room. Clem asks Pete what he is going to do, and Pete eyes a saw on a pallet nearby. It is strongly implied that Pete is going to have to saw his infected leg off. I suspect that Clem is going to have to help saw his leg off (much like Lee cut off David's leg last season at the start of episode 2). However, I think that he will not survive the amputation and Clem will have to fight a zombified Pete soon after the amputation. Alternatively, if Telltale decides to keep him a bit longer, I think on the way back to the cabin, Pete and Clem will come across Nick, who is now a walker and is entangled in something, like Lee's brother in episode 1.
  • Nick
  • I think this will become a Shawn/Duck situation, where saving Nick will keep him alive but saving Pete will kill him anyway. I sincerely hope not, but in the trailer, there seems to be no method of Nick getting killed unlike Pete. Nick develops an alcohol addiction after losing his uncle (He's drinking the same bottle that was used in S1 E4 and E5). There is nothing to suggest Nick dies there, but if he does, I suspect that Nick has too much alcohol and passes away, possibly from alcohol poisoning.
  • Someone Outside
  • Sarah and Clem sees someone outside, and Clem goes and opens the door. This man looks quite similar, if not the same person, as the man with the binoculars appearing in the season 2 slide. I keep seeing people thinking it's Carver, but I doubt he would go by himself, to a group that does not like him. It was confirmed by Carlos in the trailer that this man was with the group before. I'm going on a limb here, but I think that the man is the father of Rebecca's baby, but the group don't know about it (Rebecca telling Clem to 'Shut her mouth') and he was kicked out for some other reason, and joined Carver's group.
  • Missing in Action?
  • On a side note, I noticed that when they were discussing about the man they were with before, Pete and Nick are missing. Could this indicate their fate, or is Trolltale at it again?
  • To The Mountains
  • The group are seen trekking to mountains, Luke saying that they are 4 or 5 days away. Rebecca tells Alvin that she can't keep going. I suspect that Rebecca is very close to giving birth, though, as indicated by the episode 3 slide, it will not happen yet. I think the man that visited them threatened them, and the group took the threat seriously. Sarah and Clem are seen walking together (recognized by their shoes), indicating whatever the man said scared the hell out of them and they are more than likely relocating. I think after discussing the man, they discussed what they were going to do, one of them came up with the idea of moving, and Clem suggested Wellington, maybe with the hope she would find Christa there.
  • The Opposing Group
  • The Cabin group make it up the mountain, and run across another group, rocking hoodies and weird hair. I think the Cabin group accidentally do something suspicious that makes them seem like bandits, but there is not enough information to analyse. However it is interesting to note that there is a ski lift behind the group.
  • I thought you were dead
  • There are quite a few candidates for this, so I'm going through most of them:
  • Michelle (Bandit who shot Omid)
  • I don't think it is her, she seems like such a minor character (Other than shooting Omid, of course), but it is still plausible. I don't really see the point, if any, of bringing her back though.
  • Omid
  • As much as I would like him to return, I don't think it's him. As the bullet didn't have an exit wound, and it likely hit one of his organs, without clean tools, professional doctors, etc, there is no way he survived. Also, why would Christa not shoot Omid to prevent him coming back as a walker?
  • Christa
  • I don't think it's her. It just feels like her fate should be left ambiguous for a bit longer, like Clem's parent's fates in S1. To me, it just ruins it if it is Christa, and I don't think Telltale would go down that path just yet.
  • Molly
  • Clem has no real reason to think she's dead (unless you shoot her accidentally), but it has been at least 16 months so Clem could think that she is dead because of the herd in Savannah and the fact that is has been so long.
  • Vernon
  • Vernon was confirmed dead in 400 Days when Joyce said "And then we lost Vernon with that goddamn boat!". However, maybe by lost, she meant that Vernon went insane or something of the sort. However, I think by lost, Joyce meant dead, and I don't think Telltale are going to bring Vernon back.
  • One of the St Johns
  • I feel this is HIGHLY unlikely, as their fate depends on what you do is S1, making them a determinant character. What about the people who killed both of them?
  • Victor (The man who you can decide to give water to or not)
  • I also don't think Victor will reappear in this episode, either. I do feel he will return, but I think he will return in episode 3 or 4, and whether or not you gave him water will decide something in the story. It is plausible, as Victor was near death last time we saw him, and the river was overrun by walkers, but there is a silhouette in the episode 4 that looks strikingly similar to him (I know it also looks like Vince but we also claimed that Kenny was returning in S2E1.)
  • Lilly
  • One of the raging discussions has been 'Who is this mystery character?'. Lilly left the group in episode 3, after shooting Carley/Doug. You can either choose to leave her on the road, or keep her in the RV, which she later steals. I think it is very, VERY plausible that Lilly is this mystery character. She never died on-screen. You either left her on the road with the clothes on her back or she stole the RV with gas for no more than 30 miles. Imagine: Lilly is a hardened survivor, much more than season 1, after Larry's death. She leads a group of bandits so they can survive by themselves. Also, it would be interesting, because Lilly might want to know what happened to the rest of the group (Kenny, Duck, Katjaa, Lee, Ben) depending on your relationship with her as Lee.
  • Kenny
  • Arguably the most popular character to return, as much as I want it to be Lilly, I think it will be Kenny. Telltale have confirmed that Kenny's fate will be explored. Now that they are in North Carolina, it is highly unlikely and unrealistic that Kenny will return as a walker (unless we return to Savannah which has a slim-to-none chance of happening). Furthermore, files have been found that allegedly mention the words 'Kenny' and 'A House Divided'. This should not be taken as a confirmation, but prove this point further. Considering how he was when we last saw him, we are going to need some serious explaining on how he survived (maybe a flashback?)

  • What I'd like Telltale to do, but is VERY unlikely, is to make the character Lilly or Kenny, depending on who you sided with more in S1. If Telltale wanted a nicer character to be introduced, they could make it the person that you sided with more appears. Eg Side with Lilly most of the game, a wild Lilly appears. If TellTale wants to go down this route, but make the character more antagonistic, they could make it that the person who appears is the person you didn't side with, and would be cold towards Clem for what Lee did to them.

  • The Screenshots
I'm referring to these three screenshots:
    Alt text

  • First of all, where are the other cabin survivors? I highly doubt they would kill off Rebecca, Alvin, Nick/Pete, Carlos and Sarah this early, so where are they? Why are only Luke and Clem out there? Second of all, in the picture where Clem is fighting a walker, where is Luke? Isn't he supposed to be protecting her? Lastly, why is Luke trying to stop Clem from attacking the walker? Does he know the walker? Does he not want to blow their cover?

  • Questions for S2E2:
  • Who is the man who was with the group before?
  • Was the man who was with the group before Carver?
  • What happened to Nick/Pete?
  • Who is this mystery (wo)man?
  • Why are they travelling to the mountains?
  • What is the other group doing there?
  • Why did Clementine open the door?
  • Questions for the rest of the season:
  • Where do the main 400 Days characters come into play?
  • What happened to Christa?
  • What was the point of giving that man water (or not)?
  • Is Carver someone we know?
  • What happened to the rest of Shel's group? (We already know what happened to Roman, but what about the others?)
  • What is the point of stealing the watch?
  • What will come of being/not being Sarah's friend?

  • There is nothing to suggest Nick dies there, but if he does, I suspect that Nick has too much alcohol and passes away (I'm not an expert on this so I don't even know if this would be realistic or not, would be helpful if someone confirmed/corrected this for me).

Nick might be an idiot but i dont think he would pass away 5 mins into the next episode.. he is having a little drink because he is depressed but i can bet you that he wont pass away from getting drunk. I would go out protecting someone i care about and trying to make a difference.. not getting wasted.

  • that was only a from few seconds of footage.

He didn't seem to be all that interested in Clementine or finding the cabin.

  • Who is the man who was with the group before?
If you mean Carver, it was probably like a Kenny/Lilly situation. Both groups had people who wanted to run things differently. As far as we know Carver could me more of a good guy than a bad one.
Was the man who was with the group before Carver?
It probably was someone who was part of Carver's group or Carver himself. I have no idea why they would be at the home in the first place unless they want something or tell them something that leads to them moving once again.
    What happened to Nick/Pete?
When I first played I chose Nick over Pete because I thought Pete was going to die anyways, but then I thought well if Nick was going to run to the house with me I rather make this more of a adventure and follow Pete just to see what happens so I replayed it. I think by what you chose either cut Lee's are off or not will determine what happens here with Pete.
    Who is this mystery (wo)man?
I think it will either be Lilly/Kenny but it might be someone we never met but Clementine has. We didn't see what happened to her after 16 months. I am positive they met some humans. Maybe some they thought were dead.
Why are they travelling to the mountains?
Carver probably knows where they are now since they moved away from him. It could be very likely that Roman has to do with this strange Carver guy. Since he was really strict about killing people who leave the group it could be the same for Carver.
What is the other group doing there?
Who knows? Either Clem's new group stumbled upon some other peoples territory or maybe the mystery the thought to be dead character's group.
Where do the 400 Days characters come into play?
They have already, when I saw Roman dead it was a hint that there are connections. And the fact that the characters from 400 days depending on what you choose say that they are joining another seemingly perfect group go north we might see some characters.
    What happened to Christa?
Although I think she is dead, she wasn't seen shot or dead just like Kenny and Lilly. She might even of joined Carvers group.
What was the point of giving that man water (or not)?
It will probably be a important decision later on, he seemed to be in pretty bad shape to get up and be alright again without help.
    Is Carver someone we know?
I would be surprised if it was and I hope it is. What if it is someone who changed there name to something else?

  • That alcohol and passing away thing doesn't make sense, For me it could be that they don't go to the cabin ,they are obviously somewhere else and maybe Nick doesn't stop drinking and goes crazy forcing Clementine to leave him behind , Maybe a horde of walkers approach that place but Nick just gave up and Clem leaves him there

  • I think the guy who came to the door might be the father of Rebecca's child since Clementine said he was looking for her specifically. Remember she said in the bathroom "let it be his". This is probably going to cause conflict with her and Alvin.

Also, I predict that Clementine will try to befriend Sarah, but her father will get upset. In the kitchen, he's mad that Clementine "manipulated" his daughter into helping her. He tells her to stay away from her. He's trying to make sure she has a sheltered life and doesn't know how bad the world is. But I think that because he hides the world from her instead of teaching her how to use a gun and survive that ultimately she's going to get bitten and die. And he will probably blame it on Clementine for "showing her the world" or something.

As for the "I thought you were dead" person, I don't think it's Christa, but I do hope she is alive. It seems like a bold decision to kill off the two remaining original characters (besides Clementine) so quickly like that.
    Just my thoughts.

One curious thing to note is that Sarah does not appear with the group, but I think she was just cut out of the trailer because Carlos does not look/seem upset/sad.

We do see Sarah but only a second of her shoes when they are walking to the mountains, It also appears she is walking with Clementine so it seems that they are still friends at that point.

  • edited January 2014

Just rewatched it, is it really them? Seems kind of hard to tell.

Also, I don't really think it'd be odd if Sarah was left behind, depending on the reason they left, of course. Carlos has obviously sheltered the hell out of her and the trip is no doubt dangerous.

    • Kenny - Quite likely, since his fate is presumed to be explored in the latter episodes. I hope the Kennazis don't condemn me for saying "quite".
    • Lilly - Likely, since I let her take the RV. However, Clementine has no reason to have assumed her to be dead.
    • Vernon - Like Lilly, no one from season one has really witnessed his fate. He's presumed dead.
    • Michelle - Probably, but she likely died from that shotgun hole right through the guts.
    • Lee - He's dead. Deal with it. :P
    • Molly - A little bit more likely to me than Lilly since molly had more zombie survival experience in my opinion, and Lilly's RV was not going to go far.
    • Ben - I'd personally like it to be ben, but i'm afraid that he's dead.
    • Christa - Makes sense. Clementine heard a shot while trying to escape the woodland bandits, and I think that's where she's coming from.
    • Pete - I saved him, but maybe he'll volunteer to be left behind and keep Carver's group or the Walkers busy, or keep watch on the cabin.
    • Nick - He ran into the forest in my story and it showed Pete instead of Nick, so probably. Maybe he got lost and found those new survivors.
    • Andy or Danny - Make sense too, since I chose not to kill either of them.. and their fate was a permanent cliffhanger. Andrew's the more likely.
    • Victor - I gave him water, but I don't know what happened to him. So i'm just going to give this guy the potential chance.
      So there it is.

  • The man at the Door is Troy. Some guy had a post that showed the Season two models. I will try to find it and show the proof that the guy on the episode 2 slide is Troy.

  • I killed both brothers in 1 of my save games you fork 1 and the others you beat to a pulp and leave him for the zombies. He could of bad a chance .

The guy at the door is Troy. Plus, I think Nick/Pete don't appear because Telltale wants us to wonder if they survived or not, such a big spoiler wouldn't be shown in a trailer!

    1. Alcohol poisoning? Noo. But drunk people with anger issues do stupid things.
    2. I doubt Nick/Pete and Clem are back in the lodge. Some shed.
    3. Important thing everybody missed. WHY CLEM OPENS THE DOOR? Where are the adults? it should be their duty. Later she tells them about man outside. So they were gone. Where?
    4. Troy Carver. Yes, he goes by himself - he feels safe or knows that other people are out or is just checking the place.
    5. Luke is leading the group. He knows how far the place is. Clementine doesn't know much about Wellington.
    6. Trekking to the mountains is bad idea. Happens when there is no choice. Pregnant woman, kids, bandits, zombies everywhere. They should think about big car. Or maybe they had one and it run out of gas?

Another question. What was a point of stealing the watch?

  • Maybe it's duck as we find out he wasn't just quaking but dodging to... He some how dodge the bite and the shoot.... an just kidding I still feel it's a bad guy just seems Clem is scared.

  • Good post! Will update OP shortly.

Really... that's the most likely method you could come up with?

  • edited January 2014

There wasn't much in the room, so unless he starts hitting himself with the bottle or something, I can't think of a way he could die (unless a walker enters, but I'd imagine that the place they're in is secure). Besides, I never said it was a likely idea, just an idea.

  • Good job. IMO the guy at the door is the babys father 100 percent. look at rebbecers face at 0:26 she is clearly concerened. her saying that she can't keep going could be a cover too.

  • I don't think the "dying bandit guy" will return. I'm starting to think that the choice to give him water is similar to the girl at the Motor Inn in S1E1. It didn't have any impact on the story, and only changed the dialogue with one character. I agree with most of your points.

the kenny is alive im sure.we wait until episode 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Did anyone get greyhair for the 2 bandits that threatened the group at the end because before my one had black hair

  • The only problem I have with that theory is that Pete and Nick didn't seem to notice the man come back OR Clem giving him water. If this is the case, then it's almost guaranteed that Victor and Clementine will cross paths again.
