TWD saved game progress gone :-(

posted by Stringray on - Viewed by 541 users

When I fired up The Walking Dead Season 1, which I've bought on Steam, I noticed it didn't start. The game application's icon showed up on my iMac, but the game's window never appeared. I killed the game and restarted it. Again it didn't start. Again killed it and tried a third time. Then it did start normally, but it had forgotten all progress I made! All profiles were empy and I had to start over from the beginning!

I look into this problem and it appears a lot of people are having troubles with this game. How awkward. Anyway, I looked at the save game directory and it did still contain many of my saved games. But somehow the game itself doesn't seem to detect them.

I've ran the support tool. You can download the file here:

Notice it lists some of the TWD files in my .trash folder. You can ignore that. It's just a copy I made of the files and decided to delete that copy before running the tool.

  • By the way: I had played the game to Episode 3 where I had just arrived at the train blocking the road.

I apologize for the inconvenience. Please do a search on your computer for prefs.prop. You should only have one copy of this file in your save game directory. If you find another copy elsewhere, this needs to be removed. Usually this duplicate file can be found in either a Gamedata folder adjacent to your save directory, or in your installation folder. If you are playing on Steam, you will need to find the Walking Dead game data within your Steam installation folder. If you remove this prefs file, but still experience the issue, then it's possible the duplicate file is being recognized instead of the prefs in your save directory. Please take the duplicate file and move it into your save folder (which will overwrite the existing file). You may want to back-up both of these files before attempting this process, just in case.
Unfortunately, if this does not resolve your issue, then your prefs file has most likely been corrupted. This is rare, but can happen if the save is compromised (for example, if the game crashes during an autosave, or if the game is closed using Task Manager). If this is the case, then the corrupted prefs can no longer be used and should be removed from your computer to prevent any further complications.

    • I searched, but there was only one instance of that prefs file on my system (in ~/Library/Application Support/Telltale/The Walking Dead, so not in any of the Steam folders).

I managed to fix the problem myself by restarting the game from the beginning, waiting for the first autosave and then overwriting that autosave game file with the latest save game file that was still present in that directory from before the problems started. I also 'touched' the file, so the timestamps matched.

I really hope you release some official fix for this issue. I see so many people reporting problems with this game.
