Go get it now if you don't own it! This isn't a temporary deal. It is a temporary offer, but once you buy it (for free) you own it. Even after the due date is passed. Go and get it now even if you're computer can't play it! Someday maybe you'll get a good enough computer so you can play it and you'll thank your lucky stars that you managed to take advantage of this incredible deal while it was free!

Those of you who don't know what Portal is....you're beyond help.

  • Hmm, I played Narbacular Drop and quite enjoyed it, I don't know if I need some cruddy remake.

I kid, I kid. Thanks for the tipoff!
  • Well it's not /totally/ free is it. You have to sign up for a Steam account. If you download "Abe Lincoln Must Die!" from Telltale, you don't need to have a Telltale account to run it, do you?
  • Steam is free...and it only requires an email and password to signup. And once you activate a game once in Steam you can play it in offline mode.

For a free tier-1 title like Portal this isn't much of a big deal. Also, you do need Steam to play the free version of Abe Lincoln Must Die. Or can you get it for free from Telltale's store as well? Either way, please let's not turn this into another Steam-bashing thread.

This post is just to respond to the question. I have few problems with Steam, though I by no means want to use it for everything.

Anyway, Yes, it's free on Telltale's site, and you just need to download the free installer.
  • I am very happy that TTG has its own shop. I'm not a big steam fan and dislike having the client running on my machines.
  • As soon as you start playing multiplayer games Steam becomes useful. That and the sales
  • Civilization V is getting the full run of Steamworks features. That's going to be useful!
  • Def, I hate the wee GameSpy thing that always pops up for Civ IV

Some of the less scrupulous out there are prolly registering tons of Steam accounts to flog on eBay with Portal attached
That's actually a pretty good idea!

    :p

I own Portal already (the Orange Box even), but does owning just Portal allow you to play Source Mods as well? If it does, it opens up a lot of opportunities to a lot of people.
