Countdown to Ep 5: "The City That Dares Not Sleep"

Whoa is it time for one of these already? Probably not, but here it is anyway.

So yeah, July's pretty close to done so it's time for the Final Count..down... thread. Hm. I didn't expect to go there at all. My apologies.

I'm Jake, and as many of you guys know from elsewhere on the forums, I wear quite a few hats around the TTG offices. The last few months, I have been fortunate enough to wear the hat of "director" for the final chapter of The Devil's Playhouse, "The City That Dares Not Sleep.".

I'll be hanging around this thread for between now and release, answering questions and dropping amazingly obscure, indecipherable, impenetrable, mind-rending hints about the final episode. Which you guys will surely figure out within like ten minutes, causing me to freak out thinking I've unwittingly spoiled the season finale for you. Fortunately, you'll then inevitably second guess yourselves and get it all horribly wrong a few days after that.

The episode was written and designed by Chuck Jordan (writer/designer/director of The Penal Zone, and lord overseer of the whole season), who is enjoying his new exotic life outside the office (which means he's probably at home on his couch playing Limbo on XBLA), but hopefully he can be coaxed into stopping by as well to help field things, too.

So yeah, the questions, the speculating: Fire away!

Uhhh, uhhh, bullet points.... Stemmle had all those cool bullet points. Dammit. Bullets.

I am less prepared than Mike "Master of the Countdown Thread" Stemmle, if you didn't notice. My bullet points, however, far outclass those of any prior thread. Feast:
  • It's the last episode of the season.
  • It features some very nice decorative clocks and lamps which I think you'll enjoy.
What more do you need to know?

  • I laugh every time Sam makes his happy face. I do hope to see it some more.
  • Well when your partner has turned into a 15 foot tall demon monster bunny like thing, it helps to crack a smile once in a while.
  • I liked the smile he made at the BANANG!

Subtitles would ruin the end credits. If they are there, at least take them off if people play the game without subtitles.

I hate subtitles because I always just stare at them and don't even end up looking at what's happening on the rest of the screen.
I think subtitles make the game look tacky, but then again I don't like the feel of the game without popup text enabled (even though I'm in the U.S and can easily identify every object).
  • Popup text is a must, as otherwise you don't know whether something can be selected or not.
  • So, I noticed a bit of an inconsistency with Papierwaite between Episodes 3 & 4. In TSMB, he says to Skun-ka'pe as they form their truce, "You get the galaxy, I get the world?" Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Papierwaite and Norrington were trying to save the world from Junior, not conquer it.

So my question is this: Should we be looking forward to some interesting twist involving Papierwaite's motives in the finale, or was this just a slight mishap that I'm overestimating?
  • I'm thinking he was lying about the whole world thing. He'd use Skunk-ka'pe's technology to find all the toys, then he'd get them to the Toybox, and send it back to Junior. He was planning to double-cross Skunk-ka'pe, but of course, it didn't work out.

    Can't he do both?

    Not if he's dead
  • Look at the background there http://www.telltalegames.com/store/samandmax-thedevilsplayhouse It looks a lot like the background in the Bluster Blaster future vision, and just next to the episodes list Sam and Max seem to be floating in space.

Maybe part of the last episode will take place in space after Max or something destroyed the world.

PS : And this space background actually appears in a lot of other places, like behind the Narrator.
