The Walking Dead Game Series is in trouble

Molly had survived on her own up until the group arrived in Savannah.
I think she would've been okay with leaving the group and their boat if she felt it might end up being a death trap.
And like the game loves to reiterate: the living are more dangerous than the dead.

Lee's death arguably resulted in the most impactful scene so far in The Walking Dead Game.
Your opinion is your opinion of course, so I won't call you out on it, but for me it was not at all a wrong choice by Telltale.

    1) It allowed for Clementine to develop from a 'child/companion character' to a full-fledged survivor, and explore the psyche of a child handling herself in the world's setting.

    2) Telltale says to their audience that they will kill characters off - that there is always a constant threat of death, even for the pivotal character of the story. And for god's sakes, he weaved through a crowd of zombies. He definitely should have died - if not at the end, then somewhere along the way.

    3) It removes the possibility of a 'dynamic duo'. Now this is my personal opinion - if Lee had stayed alive with Clementine, they would just give off the impression of being too invulnerable. A pair of characters who've made it through impossible odds to overcome anything - it makes them heroes, not humans. And the whole crux of The Walking Dead's emotional rollercoaster is that the characters are humans. Not video game characters, not saviors of the world, not the 'invulnerable carriers'.

It keeps them mortal in our eyes and our minds.

    __

That aside, I find Clementine without Lee to take care of her and fight for her is a much more interesting story to explore.

Actually your right on alot of things but TellTaleGames has made some of the greatest games I've ever played also. But thanks for ty

  • As far as I know telltale will make the right decision in the end and probably make it better

  • It is, he made that statement at comic con I believe when discussing the future of the walking dead or something.

If that's true then that shows how much he really doesn't care what consumers think.

  • She might of already known the size of the boat, unless she was planning on murdering everyone in that group, she wasn't going to risk trying to get in.

Not really smart to completely jeopardize yourself in the POSSIBILITY that you might not get on the boat.

  • so? what's bad about writing The Walking Dead for himself rather than anybody else? Sure, he puts it out there and it makes money, but it's his story.

All very reasonable. I, too, would like a zombie world in which no one gets bitten, no one dies, no one goes completely mad and no one commits suicide over the loss of a loved one. Oh, and the survivor dating scene would be a RIOT. That would make such a great game! Actually, why not make the zombies little kittens, that would be far better also. The Walking Little Kittens. All the happy couples could pet them while they endure all those hardships of survival.

    Oh waiiiiit.

As to examples of narratives which end up killing their main character, well. How about a good many books and movies, including high literature? Did you think that a video game protagonist is somehow exempt because "he's the player"? Hah. That was LAST century, we've had a new one for 13 years now!

I just want to address the Molly issue. It was perfectly logical for her to go back taking care of herself, given that she's been doing it for awhile. You said that her staying in a group would help her survive longer. But I say not true, even Christa and Omid understood being in a group wouldn't automatically up your chances of survival. It was just the two of them together, and from how they told their story it seems they hadn't had anything bad happen to them. Now look at Lee group, it was large, then everyone started to kill each other. Not to mention the numerous bad situations they got themselves into.

A bigger group means more opinions, more conflict between people, and generally more problems all around. Sure, more people might also mean you'll have someone to watch your back from time to time. But if your someone like Molly who's smart, and been looking out for yourself for awhile. Why not go back to how you were living before? It's less complicated, and the only needs that are important are hers. She doesn't have to worry about the needs of a group.

  • Are you autistic? Many of the choices actually make sense like Lilly being paranoid, Molly not wanting the group to argue because of her, and Katjaa being depressed and suicidial because of the death of her son.

  • Considering the game got game of the year and so many people love it shows just how much of a waste that huge typing nonsense was.

    He is using sarcasm.
Plus, don't make fun of autistic people.
EDIT: If you were replying to Vainamoinen, this still applies. If not, ignore this post.

  • I do think killing off characters so often is kinda silly. I mean, what's the point of getting attached to a character if you know they're probably gonna bite it in an episode or two?

  • season 2 isnt great?

in your opinon all that remains wasnt great. not season 2.

  • It just goes to show that anyone can die at ANY moment, not just late game.

  • I get what you're saying 100%. I'm glad Telltale tries to keep us on edge, but I feel like they missed out on really interesting character development for certain people (Carley comes to mind).

  • Yeah, I was kind of pissed when they killed off Omid, but I can see why they did what they did.

  • I stumbled into this weird post looking for a mobile version to this forum.

  • Omid and Carley were my favorites. When they died I flipped shit. But I really feel sorry for the voice actors. Poor folk have no job security lol

We all got our favorites, and Telltale loves killing them off. When Snow died in TWAU I had no reaction cuz I'm so used to it.

  • Oh fuck. You are not very smart right? Or i dont know how explain this. Maybe you are joking or trolling. Yeah Lily shoot Carley without reason there was nooooo strain between Lily in Carley they were like lesbian couple everyday right. And everything in group was going amazingly well. You know they were going in to woods to SHOOT Duck. That means he is practically dead. She didnt want to see her son die couse thats very hard for parents if you didnt figured out yourself. So you think zombie hang himself on the bell? WOW. Do you have brain? I am really go to the doctor. I am not going any further couse i have no time.

This is just plain stupid. If you don't like the game, then don't play it. You have no right to talk sh*t about it, a lot of people here love and appreciate the game and the hardwork behind it. We all had things we wished never happened in the game, but there's nothing we can do, bad things happen, that's life. You just have to deal with it. There's a story in the game and it is not written for YOUR taste alone. I wonder if you EVER read The Walking Dead comics or watched the show.. People die in TWD. It's just the way it is, you don't like it, go play other other zombie-survival games with different settings.

  • Ok, season 2 SO FAR.

I really don't think it's in trouble. Silly to say. You remind me of this one guy who made a list of everything he wanted in GTA5. I can't recall the things he wanted, but it was hilarious. The dude wante real life.

  • but Snow is going to come back anyway, so it's not like it matters

  • I have to completely disagree with the OP.

Telltale in my opinion are doing very well and I feel Season 2 will be equally as successful as Season 1.

"I'mTryingToHelpWD" (you aren't helping really, sorry) In regards to your views:

"I also believe that alot of fans of the Walking Dead Game series are extremely dissatisfied and extremely puzzled and angered at these choices TTG has made for Season 1."

Of course! There are lots of choices that annoyed fans of the game but at the same time it equally makes it a great game, plus that's why we are given different choices to make. That's why I have more than one save so I can see the differences. Obviously some choices are fixed that it happens no matter what but still! I am satisfied with most of the decisions.

"I am not trying to say TTG is a bad company I believe they are an extremely talented group of developers, but things like Lily shooting Carley for no reason, Katjaa shooting herself (or if Duck killed her which doesn't make much sense because hes obviously not turned yet),"

I liked Carley/Doug and sure what Lily did sucked but it was meant as a shock factor, it was intended to hit us emotionally. I didn't like it, of course not, but for the general progression of the story and how it was meant to make us feel afterwards made me like it even more and I am sure many others agree with me (maybe not but that's why we all have opinions!). Same with Katjaa, the reason behind it was she couldn't live any longer, the heartbreak of losing her only son. Her suicide was another emotional shock for us, intended to hit us hard! It worked as I wasn't expecting it. You also must understand that another reason behind all these deaths is to make way for new characters to appear otherwise there would just be too many characters to focus on. The same thing will happen in Season 2, we will grow to like some characters and they will be killed off.

"a zombie grabbing Ben in that armory from the bell (which does not make any sense since the zombie wouldn't be smart enough to do that and how would it get up there to begin with?),"

It was mentioned somewhere (I forget where) that the zombie in the bell tower was Oberson Crawford himself and that he went up there to hang himself (obviously before the community fell). Also I'm sure a zombie hanging would try to swing forward to attack the living if it was able to. It's not a case of it being smart lol, it doesn't need to be.

"and these next four things are COMPLETELY NONSENSICAL AND NEVER SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED, Molly leaving Lee and the other survivors to go out on her own in a suicide mission in a zombie infested town instead of surviving with others on the boat? THAT MAKES NO SENSE would'nt she increase her chance of survival by going WITH THEM?"

Why is it nonsense? Molly stated in Episode 4 that she preferred being alone to survive or something along those lines and changing her mind. She probably has a better chance surviving on her own as if you remember what Christa said in Episode 3, she didn't believe in strength in numbers as that is what would get you killed and this is true! I know if I was a survivor in a zombie apocalypse, I would only like to have 1 to 2 people with me maximum and those I would trust. Molly also probably felt like an outcast to the other survivors.

"Next why do you play as Clementine in Season 2? It's kind of weird to play as an 11 year old girl in a zombie apocalypse."

I don't think it's weird at all! In fact I think it's an interesting move by TT. Maybe not everyone agrees with it but I like the change, plus it moves the series in a different direction showing Clem's survival because as we know, she's still a kid. TT said she would show different ways of surviving unlike Lee.

"And this next thing just outrages me, as much as everything else I've mentioned. Lee wakes up after he was sleeping on the couch to find Clementine is missing. He runs outside behind the house in the backyard to see her hat laying out in the alley. He jumps over the fence, picks up the hat and worries about Clementine. He hears a noise behind some trash and looks. After that a zombie jumps out at him. The zombie scratches and infects Lee. ALRIGHT WHY WOULD YOU KILL OFF YOUR MAIN CHARACTER? IT DOESN'T BUILD UP ANYTHING. IT SHOULD JUST BE ABOUT LEE AND CLEMENTINE'S SURVIVAL AND RELATIONSHIP ALONG WITH OTHER SURVIVORS. THAT MADE NO SENSE LEE COULD CARRY THE SERIES MORE."

The zombie actually bites lee not scratches but anyway, yes this was probably the most annoying thing TT did as i didn't expect the main character to be killed off but again as i said earlier, it has an impact on our gameplay and how we feel about it. I do wish however that it could have given us the option to have Lee survive from cutting his arm off or let him die but oh well.
    **
"AND TELLTALE GAMES WHY DO YOU ALWAYS SEEM TO KILL OFF OR COMPLETELY REMOVE ROMANCE INTERESTS ALL THE TIME IN YOUR GAMES. STOP DOING THAT PLEASE I ASK YOU WHY DID YOU KILL OFF CARLEY, HAVE LILY GO NUTS, AND THEN HAVE MOLLY RUN OFF AND MOST LIKELY KILL HERSELF BY DOING SO AND THEN KILL OFF LEE AND THEN HAVE YOU IN SEASON 2 PLAY AS CLEMENTINE?"**

So what? Why does every film/game series need to have romance? I actually prefer that it doesn't. It's DIFFERENT!

My views on your thoughts are not in anyway aimed to make you angry but i just wanted to share my thoughts on them.

  • I guess the only thing I don't agree in this season so far, is that you can't get your gun in the bathroom. really what fool in this world would leave a gun behind? I know if I were in a post apocalipse world I would rather have a gun with me all the time and never get apart from it, so it was really dumb from Clem to leave the gun at the sink.

Other that that, I remember being pretty pissed with some fixed events in season 1, and being unable to change them, but now its over and I'm okay with the style the walking dead is going for.

But really, as much as I hoped Lee survived, I can see why they killed him, It was to shock the player, as Lee seemed invulnerable thus far, and honestly, I think it helps to set the walking dead series apart, not many games kill their main characters

  • True, I could see Lee and Clem in Season 2 but i feel like the only reason why The Walking Dead Season 1 was just a great game was because it brings out Emotion in the players. In COD all i do is kill people and get 25-0 K/D and on to the next game. With this i actually feel something and care about the characters in a way i haven't with other games. The Ending wouldn't be as dramatic without Lee's death.

  • This. All of my this. You sir, get a thumbs up. The only point that I disagree on is playing as Clementine. Though it's only because it makes what Lee taught her pointless, except for the things you had no choice in (cutting her hair, shooting guns, etc.). She doesn't distrust people unless you make her, which irritates me a lot.
